There’s something about beach towns that makes you never want to leave. Hiriketiya Beach in Sri Lanka is no different. It’s a place where the salty ocean breeze and the gentle rhythm of the waves carry you into a state of serene calm.

Tucked away on Sri Lanka’s sun-kissed southern coastline, Hiriketiya Beach affectionately known as Hiri) is a crescent-shaped bay framed with swaying coconut trees and a tropical jungle.

Once a well-kept secret, Hiriketiya Beach has evolved from a sleepy beach town to the next hotspot on the South Coast, stealing the spotlight from popular beaches like Mirissa and Weligama. Today, Hiriketiya has become a haven for digital nomads, surfers and wanderers while co-working spaces, trendy surf shops, cosy cafes, beach bars and hidden restaurants line up along the beach.

From the vibe to the food, the view and the surf, it is a place that makes leaving feel impossible. It’s a beach town that’s very easy to fall in love with, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself extending your stay.

Why You Should Visit Hiriketiya

Here’s the thing – you may not always find Hiriketiya in all the travel guides. However, in all seriousness, Hiriketiya Beach is not a destination you should skip. This charming bay isn’t just a contender against South Coast favourites like Mirissa, Unawatuna and Weligama, it’s carving out its own identity as a must-visit destination.

Sure, it’s no longer a hidden gem and yes, it gets busy during the peak season when surfers flock to ride the waves but that doesn’t mean the magic has faded.

Also, Hiriketiya is so much more than a surf spot. It’s fast becoming a hub for digital nomads, slow travellers and those chasing a quieter, more authentic vibe.

Regardless of these developments, this horseshoe-shaped bay fringed by coconut palm trees and backed by monkey-filled jungles, remains one of the most picturesque beaches in Sri Lanka. For now, at least, it hasn’t fallen victim to over-commercialisation and remains a place where the jungle meets the sea and time seems irrelevant.

And the people? The locals are warm and welcoming, like the coastal breeze, adding an extra layer to the magical coastal vibes of Hiriketiya.

Things to Do in Hiriketiya

Surf at Hiriketiya Beach

This horseshoe-shaped bay is one of Sri Lanka’s top surfing spots in Sri Lanka, catering to all levels. Despite its small size, it packs a punch with different areas of the bay offering different challenges.

  • Beginners can stick to the right-hand side of the bay with smaller, manageable waves.

  • Intermediate-level surfers can head to the middle where waves are slightly bigger.

  • Experienced surfers can head to the far left for the reef break with exciting waves.

Surfboards are readily available along the beach with many rental spots also offering surf lessons. So, if you suddenly feel the urge to try out surfing or improve your skills, Hiriketiya is perfect for you.

Swim, Chill and Do Nothing

Not into surfing? No problem! Hiriketiya welcomes everyone with its calm waters perfect for swimming and a beach that’s perfect for chilling. Have a refreshing dip in the ocean, rent a sunbed at a beachside bar or sprawl out on the sand for an afternoon of pure relaxation. And don’t forget to stick around for the sunset.

P.S. If doing absolutely nothing sounds like your dream, Hiriketiya is the perfect place to perfect that art.

Yoga Sessions

Another popular pastime among visitors to Hiriketiya is none other than yoga. To be honest, we get it – the tranquil vibes of Hiriketiya perfectly align with yoga, making it a great spot.  There is no shortage of guesthouses and yoga studios, offering daily yoga sessions. So, whether you are a seasoned yogi or just starting, practising amid the serene ambience of the sea and the jungle will surely be an unforgettable experience.

Explore Dickwella

Feeling a bit crowded in Hiri’s small bay? Dickwella, just a short journey away, offers a quieter escape.

With a long stretch of white sand going on for miles, it’s a great spot to chill and spend the day. However, that’s not all. With a diverse mix of activities, you can choose your pick and spend every minute of the day to your liking.

Walk to Blue Beach Island

Blue Beach Island is a tiny island located off the coast between Hiriketiya and Nilwella. This tiny, picturesque island that’s accessible via a narrow sand bar is among the most beautiful natural attractions in Sri Lanka.

A visit to this tiny island offers a scenic 2.5 km trek through lush greenery, stunning panoramic views of the coast and sea from its trails and natural rock pools to cool your feet and soak in the serenity.

Don’t forget to time your visit to catch the sunset for an unforgettable moment, but plan to leave before dark because getting back can be tricky without daylight.
