Anuradhapura
City Guide

Overview

Walk through the remnants of a legendary city, where sacred trees have outlived civilisations and ruins whisper tales of the kingdom's past. Anuradhapura is etched in the ancient history of Sri Lanka and has been the spiritual pulse of Sri Lanka for over 1300 years.

Significance

Anuradhapura isn’t just any old city; it’s the heart of the country’s heritage being the first kingdom of ancient Sri Lanka. As the first capital, it served as the political and religious hub for over a millennium. Imagine a place where monks once meditated, kings made grand plans and time itself seemed to stand still. Steeped in spiritual reverence, Anuradhapura is home to some of the oldest Buddhist sites in the world, making it a key destination for pilgrims and history enthusiasts alike. In 1982, Anuradhapura was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
