Hiking and Camping Opportunities

Some places to visit within the city are just too iconic to miss out on. The Lotus Tower is a symbolic landmark, being the tallest building in the country. The observation deck gives an incredible view of the city. Viharamahadevi Park is the largest park in Colombo and is perfect for a stroll or picnic. Pettah Market is a bustling bazaar where you can find everything from fresh produce to electronics. Colombo Dutch Hospital is a colonial-era building, now transformed into a shopping and dining precinct.

Ella is a hiker's paradise, with trails leading to Ella Rock, Little Adam’s Peak, and the Diyaluma Falls. Camping is also popular in the surrounding areas, offering an immersive nature experience.

Ella enjoys a colder climate year-round, with temperatures ranging between 20-28°C (68-82°F). The best time to visit is from January to March, when the weather is ideal for outdoor activities.

Geographical Overview


Located in the Badulla District of Uva Province, Ella is approximately 200 kilometres east of Colombo. It sits at an elevation of around 1,041 metres (3,415 feet) above sea level, providing a cool escape from the tropical heat of the lowlands.
