Tucked along Sri Lankan’s southern golden coastline is the tiny vibrant beach town Hikkaduwa. 1) Explore Hikkaduwa Beach

 

Internationally known by many tourists, Hikkaduwa beach is no doubt one of the main beaches that you should explore when you are in the South of Sri Lanka.Famous for its golden sandy beaches,Hikkaduwa is perfect for sunbathing,swimming or just simply taking a stroll on the beach while enjoying the calm sound of the waves. Tip: Visit during the early morning or late evening to enjoy the beach with less crowds.


 

2) Snorkeling at Hikkaduwa Coral Sanctuary 

 

Just a few meters from the shore lies the Hikkaduwa Coral Sanctuary, a snorkeler’s paradise. This shallow reef system is home to colourful corals, exotic fish and even friendly sea turtles. You can rent snorkelling gear from local shops or hire a boat with a glass bottom to explore the underwater world without getting wet.


 

3) Hikkaduwa Turtle Hatchery

Contribute to local conservation by visiting the Hikkaduwa Turtle Hatchery, just a few km north of the main beach. This sanctuary is dedicated to protecting endangered sea turtles like the Olive Ridley and Leatherback turtles. You can also learn about the turtle life cycle and even release baby turtles into the ocean during hatching season. This experience will not only be educational but it will also melt your heart when you hold one of the little baby turtles in your hand.

 

4) Get Your Surf On

Hikkaduwa is one of Sri Lanka’s top surf spots, attracting surfers from all over the world. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced surfer, Hikkaduwa has waves for all levels. The surf season is usually from November to April when the ocean conditions are at their  best.

5. Experience Hikkaduwa Lagoon’s Boat Tours  

Taking a boat tour on Hikkaduwa Lagoon gives you the best of both worlds as the calm waters help you relax your mind while you also get a chance to venture into the unknown and spot local wildlife, including birds, monitor lizards, and sometimes crocodiles. If you feel a little more adventurous you can take up kayaking on the lagoon and gently paddle through picturesque views as you escape the busy beach crowds.

 

6. Learn about Tsunami Vihara Honganji and the Tsunami Museum

The tragic memories of Hikkaduwa's portion in the cataclysmic tsunami of 2004 lies deeply within its people, while an educative visit to Tsunami Honganji Vihara helps understand that tragedy. One can pay their respect through the large Buddha statue built in memorial for those lost during the tragedy. Close by, the Tsunami Museum shares real-life stories, photographs, and the impact of the disaster on local communities.

 

7) Try out Fresh Seafood & Local Flavours

Hikkaduwa beach front is packed with an array of restaurants surviving up the best fresh seafood dishes and some delicious local favourites. From Crab curry to grilled lobster you are in for a flavorsome ride. Don’t forget to also try out local street food favorites like Isso wadei & kottu roti.

8). Visit Seenigama Vihara Temple

Located on a small island off the coast, Seenigama Vihara Temple is accessible only by boat and is a sacred place for locals. This small but significant temple is believed to offer protection to sailors and fishermen. Its calming atmosphere will make this visit ideal for quiet reflection.


 

9). Enjoy Hikkaduwa's Nightlife

As the sun sets, Hikkaduwa transforms into a party resort. Beach bars, reggae lounges, and beach pubs light up the beach with music and fire dances. From night beach parties under the moon to relaxed live music, the nightlife here is happening, especially during the peak tourist season.
