Golf
Sri Lanka is an island well-known for its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. But did you know that Sri Lanka has also carved out a name for itself in the world of golf? In fact, Sri Lanka’s love affair with golf seems to go way back (like over a century back). Sri Lanka is even home to one of the oldest national championships in the world.
Kicking things off was the Royal Colombo Golf Club, and today, the country boasts a selection of exquisite golf courses, each with its own stunning backdrop. Think rolling hills, lush greenery and maybe even ocean backdrops. Here are some of the best golf courses in Sri Lanka.
The Nuwara Eliya Golf Club
Founded way back in 1889 for rest and recreation purposes of the British planters, the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club oozes that old-world charm. Even today, it’s like stepping back in time. Nestled in the heart of Sri Lanka’s tea country, surrounded by misty hills, this Golf Club is like something out of a movie. This 18-hole golf course spans across 6070 yards of pure golfing bliss. This meticulously maintained landscape weaving through a tapestry of native trees and shrubs and elevation changes all add to the beauty while also challenging golfers. After a day on the course, head over to the clubhouse to kick back and relax.
The Royal Colombo Golf Club
The Royal Colombo Golf Club isn’t just any golf club, it’s like royalty. This 140-year-old private members club in Sri Lanka is the 2nd oldest royal golf club outside the UK. Established in 1896, it’s practically a living, breathing piece of history. Located smack dab in the middle of bustling Colombo, this golf course is like a secret oasis. With manicured fairways, lush greenery, the occasional water hazard and tranquil vibes, the golf course is a stark contrast to its surroundings, making it a golfing experience unlike any other. You’d never guess you are in the heart of Colombo as you practise your golf swing. Oh, and the clubhouse looks like it’s straight out of a period drama.
Shangri-La Golf & Country Club in Hambantota
Shangri-la’s Golf & Country Club in Hambantota is the first resort golf course on the island, and it’s built on a former sapphire mine. Designed by the brilliant Rodney Wright, this 18-hole course is nothing short of spectacular. Nestled right within the hotel grounds of Shangri-La’s Hambantota Resort & Spa, you can simply roll out of bed and onto the green. What’s more? Located amidst a sea of coconut palms and stunning views in every direction, this course is a feast for the eyes and also a challenge for players (no matter your skill level). Divided into three distinct zones – Coconut Plantation, Dune Area and Sapphire Mine – each offers its own unique challenges. The Coconut Plantation features lush fairways and demanding bunkers. The Dune has subtle elevation changes and stunning views of the Indian Ocean while the SapphireMine boasts large greens and numerous water hazards to keep you on your toes. After a round of golf, you can head to the clubhouse for some well-deserved rest and relaxation. Grab a refreshing drink, chow down on some pub-style foods or indulge in an Ayurvedic treatment at the spa.
The Victoria Golf & Country Club
Located in Kandy, the Victoria Golf & Country Club is a must-visit for any golf player or enthusiast. We’re talking about scenic beauty paired with world-class design – it’s any golfer’s dream come true. Designed by the legendary Donald Steel, this 18-hole championship golf course is a masterpiece. It’s acclaimed for its breathtaking layout with sweeping fairways, strategically placed hazards and views so stunning you’ll forget all about golf for a second or two. With panoramic views of the Victoria Reservoir and surrounding mountains, it’s like playing in a postcard. But don’t let the scenery fool you – the course presents various challenges for even the most seasoned golfers. Jaw-dropping views, award-winning design and a course that’s maintained to international U.S.G.A standards, what more could a golfer ask for?
Eagles’ Golf Links
Nestled on Sri Lanka’s east coast, this course is a feast for the eyes. Think rolling links and stunning seaside views stretching over nearly 7 kilometres of coastline. It’ll just make you want to ditch your cart and take a stroll. The fairways are covered with Tifdwarf and Bermuda grass, but don’t let that fool you, as there are many challenges lurking – doglegs, bunkers and water hazards. This course is suitable for year-round golf, with a top-notch irrigation system to handle those tropical afternoon showers, especially between November and January.
Safe to say, Sri Lanka is a golfer’s paradise – from stunning natural landscapes to challenging courses and unique golfing experiences. In fact, these golf courses aren’t just about the game, it’s also about the experience. Whether you are a seasoned golfer or just starting out, there’s something for everyone.
