Kallady Beach
Kallady Beach
Kallady is a popular stretch of coastline in Batticaloa, adorned with pristine white sand and casuarina groves. This picturesque beach offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and serenity, making it an ideal retreat for anyone seeking relaxation and recreation. Visitors can unwind in the shaded picnic spots or hammocks, take leisurely walks along the wooden walkways, watch the fishermen skillfully casting their nets at sunrise or engage in activities like snorkelling and diving.
Recognised as one of the most peaceful beaches in Sri Lanka, Kallady Beach serves as a sanctuary for those who wish to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Located approximately 40 minutes from Pasikuda, Kallady is separated by the serene Batticaloa Lagoon. Kallady Beach offers breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean that soothe the eyes and the mind.
Its strategic location, just a few kilometres from the city centre, makes it an accessible yet idyllic spot for visitors to relax and enjoy the natural beauty. The calm waters doubles out as an exciting playground for water sports enthusiasts, adding an adventurous dimension to this serene setting. However, it is not considered to be suitable for swimming.
Things to Do in Kallady Beach
Take a stroll along the beach
With a wooden walkway that leads straight to the ocean, taking a stroll along the beach is a must-do. This is a good idea, especially during sunsets, as fiery streaks of orange and pink set the sky and sea ablaze.
Snorkelling & Diving
With the waters teeming with marine life, Kallady Beach is an absolute hotspot for snorkelling and diving. However, swimming is trickier here as the waters can get rough.
The Kallady Bridge
Located near the beach, this bridge is no ordinary bridge. Between April and September (especially on full moon nights), you might hear faint sounds of music from the waters below the bridge. This phenomenon, referred to as ‘singing fish’, is believed to be a rare type of bivalve.
Thiruchendur Murugan Temple
As you walk along the beach, you’ll encounter this temple – a reminder of the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami. The waves struck this temple so hard that it split into two and resulted in one half of the temple being tilted.
Catch the Sunrise
Catching the sunrise over the ocean is a must. Trust us when we say it’ll light up your soul. Afterwards, you can head to the fishing boats and even help the fishermen pull their fishing nets out of the sea.
Navalady
If you are in the mood for a longer walk, head down to Navalady – where the beach meets a glittering and unspoilt estuary, painting a picture straight out of a postcard. This is where the Batticaloa Lagoon merges with the ocean.
Weather
The best time to visit Kallady Beach? Hands down, it’s between March and October with the sweet spot being the dry season from May to September. During these months, the weather is warm, sunny and just about perfect for lazy beach days and water sports. This weather makes for perfect moments, whether you’re walking the bridge, catching sunsets or diving into some adventure.
