Sinharaja Forest Reserve

The Sinharaja Rainforest is Sri Lanka's very own Lion Kingdom. Designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site, this forest reserve spans approximately 189 square kilometres. Located within the Sabaragamuwa and Southern Provinces, this reserve is home to various endemic species including flora, insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.

Why is the Sinharaja Rainforest such a big deal? Aside from being a national park, Sinharaja is one of the top biodiversity hotspots of the region. It is also Sri Lanka's only viable stretch of tropical rainforest. Apart from these, it also plays an important role in maintaining the region's ecological balance.

The flora and fauna here are next level. Over 60% of its trees are endemic, and many are considered rare. On top of that, this reserve houses more than half of the island's endemic mammals and butterflies. Sinharaja is home to many endemic species, like the Sri Lanka Blue Magpie, the White-headed Starling, and the Green-billed Coucal. While spotting big mammals like elephants and leopards is rare here, you are more likely to spot the endemic purple-faced langur, the most common large mammal in the reserve.
