Yapahuwa

Sri Lanka is renowned for its rock fortresses and the Sigiriya Rock Fortress often steals the spotlight. Yapahuwa is a lesser-known rock fortress than Sigiriya, whose rich history and magnitude of importance cannot be undermined or ignored.

The Yapahuwa rock citadel is located in the northwestern part of the island, between the two ancient cities of Kurunegala and Anuradhapura. This impressive rock citadel was built around a massive granite rock rising almost 100 metres into the air.

Yapahuwa was once the medieval capital of Sri Lanka, and King Bhuvenakabahu was one of its most famous residents. In 1272, he moved the capital to Yapahuwa in fear of Dravidian invasions from South India. While he held off the invaders for about a decade, Yapahuwa’s status as a capital diminished after his death in 1284 and the Sacred Tooth Relic in his possession was captured. The Yapahuwa Rajamaha Viharaya, located at the heart of this historic site is one of the first temples to house the Sacred Tooth Relic.

Today, while the citadel may no longer reign as a kingdom, it remains a much-visited site, rich in history and Buddhist architecture, offering a window into Sri Lanka’s medieval legacy.
