NATIONAL PARK
Picture this: flocks of flamingos painting the scenery pink, crocodiles basking in the sun and turtles nesting on the beach. These are just some sights that await you at the Bundala National Park. Located in the southern district of Hambantota, this national park covers an area of 6,200 hectares, mainly consisting of dry thorny scrub and lagoons.
Bundala National Park is well-known for being a winter home to migratory birds. Out of the 197 bird species recorded here, about 100 species of water birds have been identified as migrant birds journeying from as far as Siberia. The Greater Flamingos that migrate from India are a highlight for all those visiting. Other favourites include the likes of the ominous Black-necked stork, Eurasian spoonbill, Asian openbill and Painted stork.
While birds are the main attraction, Bundala’s got plenty more to offer – from endemic species of crocodiles to turtles, a small population of Sri Lankan elephants, leopards, spotted deer, common langur and the endemic Toque Macaque.
What makes the Bundala National Park even more special is the unique landscape – a mix of lagoons, marshes and sand dunes, which create the perfect habitat for a wide variety of wildlife.
