Gal Oya
NATIONAL PARK
A Boat Safari Paradise
Fancy a boat safari? Then, Gal Oya National Park is the perfect place (and the only place) to take a boat safari in Sri Lanka. But that’s not all! It is considered to be among the most scenic landscapes in the country. The best part? It’s relatively untouched with few visitors as it’s a long drive from major tourist hotspots.
Almost all of the national parks of Sri Lanka consist of diverse landscapes. What makes Gal Oya even more special is that it boasts a rich and varied ecosystem and topography with granite hills, valleys and large water reservoirs, offering a tranquil and breathtaking scenery. Around 45% of the national park is forested, 33% is savanna, 10% is water bodies, 9% is grassland and 2% is chena.
When it comes to wildlife, Gal Oya is home to an incredible array, from majestic elephants to crocodiles and leopards (however, sightings within the park are rare). Gal Oya National Park is also home to Toque Macaques, Grey Langur and Sri Lanka’s wild cats - the Fishing Cat, the Jungle Cat and the Rusty Spotted Cat.
About 150 species of bird also call the Gal Oya National Park home. Endemic birds such as the Crimson Barbet, Ceylon Green Pigeon, Ceylon Grey Hornbill, fishing Eagles, Scimitar Babbler and Orange Billed Babbler can be found here.
Whether you want to take a boat safari or jeep safari, go on guided hikes or immersive walks around the forest guided by the local Vedda community, Gal Oya offers unique ways to immerse yourself in the natural habitat of these animals.
