NATIONAL PARK
A Bird Lover’s Paradise
Situated in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka, Kumana National Park is the eastern sector of the Yala National Park. Spreading over an area of 18,000 hectares, it is a well-known eco-tourism attraction and bird sanctuary. If you want a wildlife adventure without the Yala-sized crowds, Kumana National Park is your answer.
Kumana National Park offers a complex mosaic of habitats, from rocky outcrops to flat terrains, water bodies, and a mangrove swamp. The swamp, surrounded by plains and a jungle, is one of this park's most prominent features and attracts many species.
Boasting over 255 species of birds, Kumana is a bird lover’s haven. At this park, you can spot birds such as pelicans, painted storks, spoonbills, white ibis, herons, egrets, little cormorants and the rare black necked stork. If you are a keen birdwatcher, you might even spot 100 species in just one day!
But wait, there’s more! Elephants, leopards and even the sloth bear call Kumana home. With an estimated 40 leopards roaming around, Kumana offers a very real chance of spotting the elusive Sri Lankan leopard without being surrounded by crowds. Who knows, you might just spot one while birdwatching!
Kumana isn’t just about wildlife – it’s steeped in history too. Discover – meditation caves, crumbling stupas, ancient inscriptions and statues – whispers of a bygone era.
