NATIONAL PARK
The Land of Villus
As the country’s largest national park, Wilpattu is a sprawling wilderness teaming with life, natural beauty and numerous natural lakes (also known as villus) scattered across the park. Covering an expansion of 131,000 hectares, this national park offers a more peaceful safari experience, so you can forget the crowds and enjoy the tranquillity.
Wilpattu might be less famous than Yala, but its wildlife game is strong. It’s well-known for its leopard sightings (coming in second behind Yala in its density of leopards). But that’s not all – keep your eyes peeled for elephants, sloth bears, deer, monkeys and crocodiles.
Bird lovers rejoice! Over 150 species of birds, including white egrets, spoonbills, cormorant egrets, and herons and rare species like the brown-capped babbler and crimson-fronted barbet, have been recorded here.
Wilpattu is more than just a wildlife park. Housing several ancient ruins and artefacts like the Veli Vehera temple complex, it’s also a journey through time. Not to forget the many ‘villus’ that attract the wildlife and make Wilpattu an amazing experience like no other.
